Medieval Day

Medieval Day

It is a one-day event held annually in August.

 The Medieval Day is a new event among cultural events taking place in Žilina. The main idea is to change the current Marianske Square to a medieval village square for one August day. Within this event, there are presentations of groups of historical fencing, promoters of historical crafts - smiths, bakers and other professions present their art on the spot. During the whole day, visitors are witness to scenes and exhibitions of medieval life, presented on the square.

Žilina Health Days

Žilina Health Days are focused on strengthening and saving people’s life and health, prevention and recovery. The aim is to suppress civilization diseases and promote healthy lifestyle. Organizers seek to offer a healthy alternative of life and to raise interest in its application in everyday life, especially in families. Within this event, measurements of blood pressure, cholesterol or body fat are performed right in the streets of the town.


North against South

North against South

A sports event within which the football is played on artificial turf with the size of 40x20 m, located on Hlinka Square. One match is 30 minutes long. Anybody can take part. The winner of the match obtains a challenge cup. Each team plays one match, either for the North, or for the South. During this event, more than 500 citizens of Žilina play football each year. Various enterprises, offices and schools take part in this event. The action is held in cooperation with MŠK Žilina, the top division football team. Within this event, football celebrities sign autographs for their fans.


Žilina Ball

The Žilina Ball was first held in January 2008 under the patronage of Ivan Harman, the Mayor. Besides opening the ball season, the Ball was a reminder of the 800th Anniversary of the first written mention of Žilina town. This event has a charitable nature; proceeds from the raffle were donated for activities of clown-doctors.

The Biggest carnival festival (called “fašiangy”) in Slovakia. During the Carneval Slovakia Žilina event, there are hundreds of masks celebrating and amusing themselves, coming from the neighbour regions of Slovakia, Poland and Czech Republic. Costumes have a non-recurring art character, typical for this region, unique in Europe and so different from other carnival cities around the world. Streets are full of stalls offering local foods, performers and folklore artists. There is a local attraction of flying masks - falling from tall buildings.


Old Town Festival

Old Town Festival

The Old Town Festival in Žilina (tradition since 1995) is the event focused on presentation of folk crafts and musical open-air festivals of all genres. It takes place in the town centre, on two main squares. Among accompanying events, there are the International Children’s Day, ecumenical services, training workshops related to the town history, and exhibitions. The Old Town Festival is the most attractive cultural event held in Žilina.


Žilina Cultural Summer

Žilina Cultural Summer

(Event taking place from June to August)

It is a two-month marathon of various cultural events - concerts, theatres, film projections, workshops, wood-carving symposium, exhibitions, and international festivals taking place in Žilina. As its part, there are Cyril-Method Days and Jánošík’s Days taking place in Terchová village, with the attendance of 70 000 visitors. Within the Žilina Cultural Summer, also the rock bands or independent artists have found their place


Santa Claus in the Town

A pre-Christmas atmosphere in the town is supported by rich decorations in the town centre. During this time, Santa Claus anually comes to the town. The winter atmosphere is also created by Christmas markets with lot of stands on both squares in the town centre. Visitors may meet and enjoy a non-recurrent feel, vanilla essence and Turkish honey. Besides Christmas markets, there is a cultural programme, charitable event called Benefit Punch, and the playing Christmas tree on the square.

The international street theatre festival (established in 2005). Its main idea is to return the theatre back on the street, free it from stone premises of stable scenes and transfer it right among the people to public outdoor spaces, under the sky and theatre marquees. It helps to transform traditional productions created in “stone” theatres in order to be played in the form of street presentation. Annually, there are international street theatre ensembles appearing at the festival. As a part of the festival, there are night fire performances, stilt theatres, children programmes and creative theatre workshops.


New Year's Eve Party

New Year’s Eve Party

After several years when there was no New Year’s Eve Party organised in Žilina, the town has revived this tradition. The last night of the year is in token of meetings of Žilina citizens and visitors on Hlinka Square where cultural festivities with top Slovak artists take place. Snack as well as organisation of the whole party is provided so that any acts of vandalism, excessive drinking of alcohol or use of consumer pyrotechnics do not occur.
